Review: The Emerald Tablet

Blurb:
Do you wish you could have the power of a god? Would you use it for good…or for evil?

When an archeologist discovers the mythic Emerald Tablet buried beneath Egypt’s desert, her son decodes the ancient text leading him to a distant world.

On that world, a slave girl begins a journey towards a destiny she cannot imagine. But when an ancient foe rises from the ashes, they will be brought together
by forces neither understands.

Leoros, who dreams of being like the heroes in the comic books, must fight to unlock the secrets of the universe to save a people he never knew existed.

Atlantia, whose bloody visions wake her in the night, senses the darkness coming.

Together they will face an enemy with the power of dark energy, lose a mentor to the assassin’s blade, and be betrayed by someone they trust. Their fight for the future is just beginning, and before it is over, a final sacrifice must be made. When the darkness comes, will they stand and fight or will they join it?

There is darkness in everyone.

My Thoughts:

I am a BIG fan of mixing up genres and see what happens. Usually good things happen, like in the case of this book, The Emerald Tablet. I think it's safe to say that from the first scene Joshua Silverman has your attention, and owns it throughout. I have read a few other reviews and my experience was quite similar after reading the first few pages, my mouth dropped wide open and I was stunned! This is a shocking and disturbing scene, but surprisingly does not feel like it's doing it for shock value alone. You know from the start that this book means business! Definitely an A++ start!

I felt that this was a solid first part of a very masterfully created story. There were a few bumpy parts, where the "worlds" confused me, but that didn't stop this from being a fun book. I really enjoyed the world building, and the character development was great! I felt maybe it would have been better to whittle back a few of the characters, but I have a feelings that they will be important in the next installment!

The end was pretty gut wrenching!  :( I seriously wanted to hug Leoros and the story closed. *sniffle* Poor guy! I hope that this doesn't change Leoros for worse!

So here's my stance on this book:

  • Character development: Good. A few characters seemed a bit redundant, but I'm gonna put that towards them being useful in the future.
  • Plot: Excellent! Very interesting and definitely had this gal hooked from the start!
  • World Buildng: Vivid, and detailed!

I liked it a lot! It was fun, well written, and a great mix of genres!
